This is a recent commissioned work for a woman who loved baking diagnosed with cancer. I also include work commissioned by my parents (an Easter Prayer). If you like this work, share it. Recipe for Disaster
Baking flour, she blooms open with pollen.
Birds and bees finger the chocolate meadow
mess mixing bowls of it to turn to dough
“Why?” knelled in prayer toward God who stuck to skin.
The tray of cookies shook the hands that held them
in offering to the reception desk
to bargain with life her passion and bless
what crumbs of good news can come from mayhem.
In the waiting room, she bakes and rises
to a humming doctor who then samples her
for a biopsy to find if cancer
what signs of hope will bring no surprises.
The question who eats at her internal tract
needs one ingredient: her love intact.
Don’t Feed It
Life can take our everything
but our love of life
unless we let it.
The Good Baker
Good news and bad news:
God pulls his angels out
before they get burned.
1 Corinthian 1:23
This year is when our stars align
Ash Wednesday falls for Valentine
thus Easter plays Jester at Death;
Come, fools and saints be of one breath.
For Christ broke bread and poured out wine
(or grape juice for Jack who’s seven).
Mom’s pirogies create a line
long purgatory come heaven.
Simple we share what love we found
to give thanks for the air we breathe,
the food we eat and the ground
beneath our feet. Lord, we receive
these gifts no constellation prize
for love by blood brings hope disguised.
